I was so touched watching today's Extream Makeover Home Edition. This week its about a really special family, a family which consist of a pair of deaf parents, a deaf, blind & retard in terms of movements young son. The only one that is normal in the family is their eldest 14 year old son.
He had to make sure everything goes right for the family, he takes extra extra care for his little brother. As a 14 year old kid, its such a big burden on his shoulder that he has to carry out RIGHT. I sort of can understand how he feels like. Cause I think I am a bit protective when it comes to my family members. You want the best for them, you dont want them to get hurt. Worrying about them around the clock. Especially when you have a family where everyone has their own problem, blind, deaf...
He is a really special kid, a very strong one. Thats why the Team gave the family a USD50k cheque to help them support the family and at the same time give the son a chance to visit Australia, a place he visited years ago & was dying to go back again.
He deserves that kind of reward.
The Makeover Team decided to give them a NEW house within 7 days. During that 7 days, the family would have a week vacation in the finest hotel in the States (I cant remember the name). Its the place where the parents spent their 1st lunch after the marriage. It was too expensive for them to spend their honeymoon there, thats why they can only afford the lunch inspite of months and months of savings.
I think it was the youngest son touched me most. The team wanted to give the best for the youngest son. To do that, they got to feel what he feels then only they will know whats the best for him. They blind fold themselves & had a class designed for them to really feeel what he feels, the see what his world is like.
Watching that part makes my heart sour. Tears were so near to rolling down my cheeks.
I cant imagine my life being like his. He couldnt see what we see, he couldnt see how beautiful the world is, how fantastic things can be. All he has is just a dark, pitch black world. Without any light and color. He cant do things normal kids do. He cant play soccer, he cant go cycling, he cant climb the trees. He missed all the fun being a normal kid.
The saddest thing is he cant see his parents face, his brother face.
Its the feeling of helpless that struck me most. You wanted to do so many things, but you just cant do it. You just cant.
WHen you grow older, you will feel so helpless that you might even think that you are just a burden to your family.
Everything is so hard for these people, what have they done wrong to have such life? They have no choice to be born that way.
For Christians, they would surely say, God have his reason doing this. Its easy to say, but its so tough to really accpet that explaination & be STRONG.
For Buddhism, the would say its the circle of life. It reflects what you have done in the past.
No matter what the religion says, the only thing that is true is YOU GOT TO ACCEPT IT & live with it. Dont give up in yourself.
Supports from the surrounding is so important to them. Letting them know that they are not alone, and everyone loves them. Let them know they arent useless trash to the community. Maybe the wouldnt have much contribution to the community, but every little thing counts.
There's is chinese saying something like this, Big man do big things, little man do little things. Everyone just do things according to their ability. It might be small to normal people, but it means alot to those less fortunate.
Accept those less fortunate, cause they are part of the world & they are the people who make you feeel more greatful than anyone else.
So folks, be greatful with what you have. You might think what you have is SHIT, but its something really important & priceless to others. Dont take your eyes, hands, hearing, ability to talk, ability to think, laugh, smile, cry for granted. You wont know someday you might just loss it, just instantly...
Be more considerate...
